10.10.2009 - First Team vs Steeton

A fast start to the game saw the Bronte pushing forward and Steeton blocking solidly. Even so Steeton had the first attempt at goal but Dave Bainbridge coolly watched the shot go wide. After 15 mins Steeton got their game going and forced Bronte to defend stoutly. The Blackas combined for Bronte’s first real chance as Liam made a strong run and slotted a pass through to Joe. His shot however was just wide. Bronte broke the deadlock when Ross Chapman picked up the ball wide right, cut inside and drove a shot that the Steeton keeper just failed to keep out. Steeton upped their game and forced Bainbridge into a string of fine saves. He was finally beaten from the spot when Steeton’s strikers proved too fast for Bronte’s defence and Sollitt was forced to bring one down two mins before the break. 1 - 1 a fair reflection on the game so far.
The third quarter of the game saw both sides largely cancelling each other out before Steeton’s strikers once again caught Bronte flatfooted to take the lead. Chapman won a free kick and subsequently headed in the cross from Dave Alderson but the referee ruled it out for a push. This was the turning point off the game as shortly after Steeton broke and, with just as much pushing by the striker at the other end, increased their lead as this time the goal stood. A corner to Steeton seemed to have come to nothing as a Bronte defender beat his man to the ball and cleared but to most peoples surprise the referee blew his whistle and once more pointed to the spot, again apparently for a push. A well struck penalty made it 4-1 to Steeton. Bronte briefly threatened to get back in the game when sub Ross Greenaway’s cross/shot was pushed against the bar only for Simian Brown to chest it over the line. But Steeton immediately responded and once more their strikers speed undid the Wanderer’s defence as they finished with a somewhat flattering 5-2 score.
